Arif's birthday is just around the corner. We plan, initially to go to Tiara Beach Resort, for a weekend holiday. However, due to time constraint, we will go to Sunway Wildlife @ Petting Zoo, for the weekend. I think he will enjoy it, since he loves cats so much.
Yesterday, I brought him to his paed, for his speech development and chicken pox vaccin. After 3 months (since August), I am quite sad & worry to report here that he still hasn't say a single word. The paed was quite nice, and although she said he maybe had mild ADHD, but I should not worry about it. Instead I should help him with his speech by going to speech therapist. After getting a referral letter from her, I made a call today to Sunway Hosp. They promise me to put Arif in the priority list and call me as soon as possible for the appoitment. The first appointment - with assessment report cost about RM200-RM250. Anyway, he will need to do hearing test past, which is scheduled on Saturday 24/11/2007. If everything's ok, he will proceed to the speech therapist. Else more tests need to be conducted. I am very worry and concern, because he's showing his frustration. And becoming more cranky. Although some may suggest that it is due to the Terrible Two thingy. I just hope I am making a best decision for him, and it could help him as much as possible.

I am dissappointed to report here that Amin had his first nappy-free accident, However it was about 6 am, so I had already waken up (after my sahur anyway). But still I scolded him, and nagged him about being an 'abang long' and how now he's a big boy and should not pee on the bed. Hmm.. I feel so sorry for him afterward.
Arif is really pushing my limit nowadays. He is the first one to wake up for sahur. And of course he doesn't want to go to bed after that. Hmm.. Really, some these days I will turn old.

We are in the fasting month, the blessed Ramadhan. Today is 12 Ramadhan, meaning we have successfully fasting for 12 wonderful days. Both Amin and Arif have yet to learn to fast. I think I am going to teach Amin when he is 6 years old, just like me. I got 6 days of fasting on my first attempt.

Last Friday, my company held a 'breaking fast' event here, at the office. So Amin had a chance to visit my office, and boy he had a great time. Firstly, there were 2 of his best friends, Awin & Hariz. So they were like playing the balloons and jumping and running everywhere. Arif tried to follow them, but he seemed content with the wide and long staircase and the lift button. Unfortunateky Saturday was not a good day for both of them, as both sufferred a case of diarrheia. Arif is the worst coz he refused to eat anything including his milk. My hubby noted that he lost some weight. Poor him.

Anyway, our Raya celebration is on, we had put on the chasing lights. I bought Amin his 'songkok', and his baju raya is ready to be collected. I had ordered tons of 'biskut raya', I hope I do have enough budget

First, I have to talk about Amin's toilet training. After all the constipation (major constipation, if I may add) and all the endless cheap diaper trip to Pjaya, I can honestly announce, he is toilet trained! Yeeee haaaa... To other parents out there, trust me I don't think for a momnet I can reach here, it just seems impossible.. but they say impossible is nothing, so here we are, with this major milestone. I can tell you straight way, the journey is not easy. First, there is diaper free during day nap, next it was diaper free when pooping, and finally diaper free during night sleep. The last one took longer than the others. I had another version back in Jan/Feb, but it doesn't work. I know accidents happen, but I'm just not patient enough to handle it. Luckily August month works for us (I think the mere fact that his diaper is too tight, and bad mommy wouldn't buy xxl size is the real reason behind our success ).

Second thing, Amin is having his first toothache. I brought him to his first dentist visit, and it's all bad news. His teeth (2 of them) need to be extracted. But because he is still small, the dentist worried that the experience will be quite traumatic. If he is still in pain, I have to bring him again for the procedure. As of now, no more icecream and sweets. And to add to his poor condition, he's having a fever; he missed school for 3 days now. I am very worried about him. If things not looked good on him today, I will take him to see another doctor.

And finally I want to talk about Arif's development in talking. Well, he is showing some progress. His syllabus is not very clear yet, and no single vocab has come out yet. But he is into way much of babbling, and he likes to imitate us when we are singing or pointing things. I notice that he didn't so much favor for us to say his favourite things, for example I want to teach him the word 'ball', but he enjoys playing the ball rather than saying the word 'ball'. But when I tell ultraman story to Amin, he will say some of my words. And he is too mobile now, he runs, jumps and play with his brother. Nak pengsan jaga dia.

Well, yesterday was my appointment with Arif's paed; and suffice to say there are good news as well as bad news.

The good news : Arif seems to not showing symptoms of autistic child; he was able to conquer other motor skills such as jumping and running.
The bad news : According to the paed, it is still too early to rule out autism. It can still be classified under autistic spectrum.

The good news : His mouth muscle and other parts seems to develop fine. There is no significant from his physical condition that is preventing him from talking
The bad news : It could be that his brain is still not making connection for him to start his speech. The reason is still unknown, it could be as simple as he just a late talker, but it could be something more serious.

The good news : He is socializing and not just living in his own world (like most autistic child)
The bad news : He's not making eye contact (this will make it difficult for him to start talking cause he cannot imitate us, the parents. His social skill is still limited, but the dr said not to worry much on this as children his age is still playing by themselves.

What do we do next?
Well, for now it is crucial for us to play with him and encourage him a lot. We have 3 months to do this, until he is 2(in Nov). If things are not progressing after 3 months, the paed shall refer him to a speech specialist. Some things she encourages us to do:
1. Play a lot. Blow bubble, for him to develop his mouth and jaw muscle.
2. Bring him to a mirror, and practice saying things in front of the mirror so that he can see and imitate.
3. One word - an object so that he can feel and touch (and connect) - to teach him repetitively for the duration of 3 months. I'm hoping he can one word in one month, thus 3 words in 3 months.

Assalamualaikum,
I m a mother from Brunei. After reading your post I eventually realised that I am now facing the same experience to those that you've posted. I would be very grateful if you could help me to share experience and stories. To tell you the truth, right now i feel totally intimidated and confused. Is there any way that we can get in touch, thru emails or something?

Okay, it was really a longgggg silence.
So a quick update : I finished my 12 hour swimming lesson andddd I can float and do breast stroke (not so clean anyway); but I still have low confidence over deep water . Amin, I'm happy to report, eversince I bought him the jacket, he has high confidence in swimming in the big pool with me. At first he was hesitate and wanted to hold me all the time, but later on, he was happy and floated by himself.
Arif meanwhile, is not doing much progress with in speaking and talking dept. In fact I am bringing him to see a paed tomorrow, just so that I have everything checked. Because believe me, when I see the checklist of early warning signs of speech development; I am very worry. His score is 50%. On the other hand he is improving in other depts, such as imitating and self feeding. During mealtime, he made huge mess that I'm sure all the cleaners out there resent us when we dine at restaurants.. ohhh well.

I and Amin are both join the swimming class on every Sunday for 6 weeks. This week was our third week.
I am still a student, however Amin had to quit. He, according to the insructor, 'cannot listen to the
instructions'. Okay... I will enrol him and Arif together when they gey the hang of it.
As for me I am still learning, so at least now I am no longer afraid of water
On another note, Arif is still not talking . His passion is now hitting me, real hard. Even
when he is angry at his brother or his father. He will go towards me, with his hand lifted in the air.
Once or twice you can laugh about it, but every time he did that, it is not laughable matter.
He can hit hard, that boy!

I was away from the office the whole week from 5-9 june, due to my dental surgery(wisdown tooth). I was in so much pain before and after the surgery. I had to resort to take painkiller days after the surgery. And it was so unfortunate that 5 June was Amin's birthday and mine felt on 8 June. There were no cakes or balloons for Amin's birthday. Only on the Saturday, we bought him a cake.

And last week I had to spent any spare moment studying for a security certification. The exam was on Saturday 16 June. I am still waiting for the result.

I have to wirte this down : Arif likes to eat ice cream and that he holds it with his two little hands And he screams when somebody, me or his father tries to take a bite into his icre cream; last time he even threw his ice cream onto the floor. Luckily his brother was kind enough to give his own to him (because he wanted to hold his new balloon and new doctor set).
